To decoy or not???

Post by TurkeyKiller12 » Sun Apr 07, 2013 3:00 pm

I plan on hunting a new place in the morning. This place is probably 80% fields with just a few hardwoods patches. The property owner says the turkeys stay in the field a lot during the day. I went and scout it yesterday and found turkey poop everywhere. I'm thinking about using a decoy in the field to try and pull the birds toward where I'll be sitting. I never use decoys. I'd rather hunt in the woods.

Take it, can't hurt to much. If it does ditch it.

Take a fan as well if you have one. I don't think it's right to use it all the time, but I know how frustrating it can be with field birds.

I've never had any luck with a decoy. Mostly because I haven't used them enough.

Field birds can be tricky. I would say take it so that they can see a hen where your calling from. And Scott is right, take a fan too. It can come in handy for those field birds. Good luck.

I would trust the property owner. If he thinks he's got them patterned for being in the field for a good part of the day I would sit the field with a decoy or two.

It's going change for you just keep hunting. I got a lot closer Saturday to getting one than what I have been this season. Just hang in there buddy.

I'm having a rough go of it too if it makes you feel any better, these birds don't make any sense.. no gobbling this morning, tore it up yesterday on the roost, then no gobbles again today despite great weather.

Think I might be going with Turkey Terminator to his lease tomorrow to give them a try there if things don't pick up this afternoon

J Gilbert, I'm not sure what's going on with these birds. I literally hunted 5 different pieces of property today and didn't work a bird. My pieces of property are all small but have always held birds.
