2.75 inch, 3 inch, or 3.5 inch shells?

Post by Cut N Run » Thu Apr 10, 2014 12:39 pm

Most guys I know shoot 3 inch shells, though some use 3.5 inch. In the 1980s I used to hunt with 2&3/4 inch #5s out of a single shot, but they worked just fine. So, how about you, what do you shoot?

I've only ever lost one turkey and that was in 2003 on a 35+ yard shot through heavy cover with 3 inch 1.75 oz. #6 Winchester Supreme.

These days I shoot 3 inch Hevi #6s or #7s.

I just bought a 3.5" Maxus, finally joined the club! I haven't bought any chokes for it yet, what size was your Pure Gold?

670

I tried the Indian Creek as well, it did extremely well.

Forewarning, I like a little more open pattern. I don't look to punch holes at 20 but want something nice and even at 40.

Not sure if you have shot it yet, but it is a great shooting gun. I shot an S3 the other day and it was nice. Shot an 1187 and a Benilli that were both good. Still prefer the Maxus as did the guys shooting with me.

I have shot 835's, 935's and SBE1 and 3" just tended to pattern better for me for some reason. I shoot 3" out of my 20 & 12. I think I might be getting a 12ga Benelli Vinci for Christmas ;) . The say it swings like a 20ga & hits like a 12ga. Hopefully I will get to find out :) .

3" #6 hevi shot for me....I have not seen a bird that was anymore dead from a 3.5" shell. Only difference I can see is the bruise on you cheek and shoulder after firing them.

Cool beans! I'll take your word for it and get a 670 as well. I'm really excited to shoot it some and see how the 3.5" shells do. I'm also looking for a pattern that will be open enough for birds that come in tight. Year by year my patience gets a little better and I try to work them in closer now. Not really looking for a super dense 40-50 yard pattern.
